Remembering Lena

I actually didn’t know Lena, so I know I can’t ‘remember her’. However the tragic death of this young woman has hit me and specifically those around me in an unimaginably personal way.

If you could click the link below and have a quick read that alone would mean a lot. There is a scholarship being set up in her name if you’re interested.

Thanks

Apples

In the UK we learn the metric system in school. When we drive we buy petrol by £s to the litre and work out fuel efficiency by miles to the gallon. We’re a metric country, so naturally our road signs are all in miles. It’s confused. Apparently Canada is, too. Officially metric but you buy apples by the pound? Nice enough, I suppose, although the imperial system always confuses me. I think I spent too much time in Germany.

Warm Days

They do exist in Canada, sometimes.

Doorways

Gerrard Street East. These places look kind of thrown together and yes, falling appart, but there’s an elegance to them don’t you think?

Piano Movers

Spotted in Montreal.

I’ve never seen a piano movers before. It’s not something many people tend to think about I guess. I guess that’s because it’s not exactly an exciting prospect. I was drawn in by the clothes hanging above the van, too. I’ve never really seen that before either, in a city I mean, it’s pretty common back in the village.

Pow!

Pow! God only knows what this kid was so excited about. Two photos of kids in two days, and none ever before. How weird. I liked yesterday’s post, it’s wasn’t my normal kind of thing, so I thought I’d follow up with this since they’re kind of in the same family.

Also, today is my birthday.

Chasing Bubbles

I had the fortune to spend Wednesday and Thursday in Montréal. I divided my time between taking loads of photos and being confused by the French language, just like I was in school.

This girl made me smile.

Subway, Subway

Back to some of my favourite things! Film photography, black and white, public transport and all those weird payphones around Toronto. Some people are hard to please, some are simply odd. This is more than just Wilson Subway station though, this is the bus/subway station TTC paid fare zone. I’m odd, but hopefully not simple.

Signing, Singing

I saw this out in Kensington Market a couple of days ago. I’ve enjoyed seeing all the daft posters stapled up around Toronto, and I’ve been trying to take more photos with people in them so I was pretty lucky both of these things came together. Anyway I’m really happy with this photo, it seems like there’s a nice dialogue between these men, they look like they’re enjoying themselves.

Mini in Kensington

Saw this car in Kensington Market. Now it’s not like I’ve never seen a Mini before, it’s a quintessentially British car (redesigned, remarketed and remade in Germany, of course). However yesterday the light was just right, and I’m really proud of how these shots turned out.
